2017 Toyota 86: Elegance On Wheels Reviewed

The old Scion FR-S car is now the 2017 Toyota 86 and is responsible for keeping the flame burning within the Toyota sports cars.

Although the FR-S is dead, sacrificed by Toyota with the Scion brand together, the vehicle is still alive under the Toyota 86 nickname. In addition to changing its identity, the name change of the 86 coincides with a half-cycle refresh that it shares with its mechanical twin – the 2017 Subaru BRZ. Just like it happens with the Subaru, there have been some subtle improvements in what concerns to the performance, but little to change your driving soul.

2017 Toyota 86 Exterior

The 2017 Toyota 86 will feature a compact and highly aerodynamic exterior profile. The body will lower, which is supposed to improve the center of gravity and therefore the handling. Most of the changes will focus on the front and rear fascia.

The front of the car features a redesigned bumper that looks more aggressive. The lower part of the bumper is integrated with larger air vents. The front also includes redesigned fog lights. It’s probable that both headlights and flashlights have LED lighting.

The rear bumper has also been redesigned. The diffuser seems to now be on the top of the trunk lid and seems a bit wider. There are also two larger exhaust pipes.

2017 Toyota 86 Interior

The interior of the 86 will be similar to the FR-S. To date, details are still sparse. However, and according to some rumors, we understand that the cabin remains relatively similar to the starting model.

The cabin can accommodate four passengers in a 2 + 2 style. While the driver and front passenger benefit of sufficient head and leg room, in the rear the space is somewhat limited. The sports car also offers a small luggage compartment but it can be enlarged by folding the rear seat. Other features include adjustable driver’s seat, a tilt steering wheel covered in leather, a 7-inch infotainment system (a custom system that integrates Bluetooth, a navigation system and smartphone applications are available as an option).

The coupe will also feature a rear view camera, cruise control, voice recognition, automatic headlights, HD radio, a USB port, auxiliary input and full power accessories, among others.

Engine

We do not expect Toyota to make changes to the engine of the 2017 Toyota 86. The vehicle should still have the 2.0L turbo-4 that provides 197 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque.

There are some sources claiming that the engine will be adjusted to produce about 200 horsepower. It is coupled with an improved 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Release Date And Price

Toyota is only offering the base model for $26,255. You pay about $300 more for the automatic transmission. If you really want to spend more, there are some valuable TRD accessories. Consider $639 for lowering springs, $425 for the air intake performance or $195 for the Quickshifter. They are all at a very reasonable price to raise the level of performance.

It is expected that the vehicle reaches dealer showrooms in the middle of 2016.
